Sacred Stillness: Why Pausing Is Sometimes the Most Productive Thing You Can Do
Let’s talk about something most writing advice doesn’t:
Stillness.
Not the kind where you're procrastinating or mindlessly scrolling, but the kind where you intentionally step back.
The kind of pause that isn’t about quitting… but about recalibrating.
Because in a world that glorifies hustle, momentum, and constant creation, it’s easy to believe that stopping—even briefly—means we’re falling behind.
But here’s a truth I had to learn firsthand:
Stillness isn’t stuckness. It’s sacred space.
When Slowing Down Feels Like Failure
I used to panic when I hit a slow patch.
If I wasn’t actively writing, launching, or publishing, I’d spiral into shame:
Am I losing my gift? Falling behind? Letting God down?
But here’s what I’ve discovered on the other side of that fear:
There are seasons where God calls us to pause—
not as punishment,
but as protection.
He’s not asking us to abandon our story.
He’s inviting us to breathe with Him.
The Lie: “If I Stop, I’ll Lose My Momentum”
This is one of the enemy’s sneakiest tactics:
to convince us that if we pause… we’ll never start again.
That rest equals laziness.
That silence equals failure.
But the truth?
You don’t need pressure. You need permission.
Permission to rest.
Permission to not have all the answers.
Permission to lay it all down—and trust that what’s meant to rise will.
When we stop trying to carry the entire story on our own, we make space for the Author to step back in.
Holy Reasons to Pause
Here are a few sacred reasons why stillness might be exactly what your writing life needs right now:
1. To Hear God More Clearly
Noise drowns out the whisper. Stillness creates space for direction.
2. To Heal From Burnout
You’re not a machine. You’re a vessel. Refilling is not optional—it’s essential.
3. To Realign With Purpose
Sometimes we get so caught up in performance, we forget why we’re writing. A pause lets us return to our why.
4. To Invite Others In
Stillness is also a chance to lean into community—to be encouraged, prayed for, and reminded that you’re not walking this road alone.
Let Stillness Be Sacred
“Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quitness and confidence is your strength.” — Isaiah 30:15 NLT
You don’t have to earn your next breakthrough.
You don’t have to write through exhaustion.
You don’t have to pretend you’re fine when you’re craving a deep exhale.
You can pause—and still be a writer.
You can rest—and still be called.
You can be still—and still be moving forward, with God.
